Copper Piping
Copper Piping
Copper piping is a versatile material for various commercial and industrial projects, including installing water pipes, refrigerant lines, and more.
Depending on your unique needs, you can choose between soft and rigid copper piping. As the name implies, soft copper pipes are flexible, which makes them easier to install. This type of piping is suitable for faucet supply lines and other small installations. On the other hand, rigid copper piping is inflexible, meaning it requires cutting for installation.
Both options are highly corrosion-resistant, durable, and reliable. To select the right copper piping for your industrial project, contact Stinson’s Industrial today.
Choosing Copper Piping
Aside from flexible and rigid options, copper pipes are available in different forms for specific purposes. The most common are:
Type K Copper Pipe
Type K copper piping is distinguishable by its very thick wall. Despite its thickness, you can get it as either a flexible or rigid pipe. In industrial settings, it is suitable for fire protection, oil or water distribution, HVAC plumbing, and more.
We recommend Type K copper pipe for main water line installations and other underground installations because of its thickness. It can withstand internal and external pressure. We do not advise using it for natural gas applications because gas contains compounds that can cause the pipe’s joints to deteriorate.
Type L Copper Pipe
Type L copper piping comes highly recommended for interior plumbing. You can also use it for fire protection and limited HVAC applications. It’s available in rigid and flexible variants and works with compression, sweat, and flare fittings.
Because Type L piping is more versatile than Type K, its use is common in different industries. Note, however, that it is not as thick as Type K, which means it can withstand less internal and external pressure. Its inability to withstand external pressure makes it unsuitable for buried installations. For example, you can use it to repair or replace old water lines that are above-ground.
Type M Copper Pipe
Type M copper piping’s wall is not as thick as Type K or L’s, but like the other two, it’s available in rigid and soft forms. Most industries use it for vacuum systems and domestic water systems. It is also affordable and works well with compression, sweat, and flare fittings.
Because Type M copper piping has a thinner copper lining than Type K and L, not every plumbing code allows it.
Copper DWV Piping
Also called drain-waste-vent piping, DWV piping is an older type of piping found mostly in older buildings. Its pressure rating is low, which makes it suitable for only above-ground installations.
