Stick welding, TIG welding, and MIG welding processes are all used in carbon steel welding. A MIG welder is the best equipment to carry out flawless carbon steel welding, though, because the wire stiffness is designed to pass through the liner from the machine with minimum friction. Depending on the voltage of the MIG welder, the weld can include one of three transfer types—short circuit, spray, or globular transfer.

Steel consists of iron and carbon with small amounts of miscellaneous metals, such as manganese, chromium, silicon, vanadium, and nickel. Low carbon steel contains only 0.3 percent carbon, making it incredibly easy to weld.

Medium carbon contains 0.30 to 0.60 percent carbon, and high carbon steels at 0.61 to 2.1 percent carbon. By comparison, cast iron contains up to 3 percent carbon, which makes it incredibly challenging to weld.

Carbon Equivalency and Cooling Rates

When carrying out Memphis carbon steel welding, we use the equivalent carbon content or carbon equivalency (C.E.), to understand how the different alloys affect the hardness of the steel being welded. We relate this ratio to hydrogen-induced cold cracking, the most common weld defect for steel. The quality determines how easily a material will fuse.

As you move from low to high carbon steel, you require preheat and post-heat treatments that will prevent the steel from cracking. The higher the carbon content, the higher the possibility of the steel cracking. When welding high carbon steel, for example, it is imperative to carry out thorough preheating and post-heating processes using unique filler materials.

Higher concentrations of carbon and other alloying elements increase hardness and decrease the ease with which the steel will weld. We follow the recommendations from the American Welding Society and International Institute of Welding for structural steels welds.

High cooling rates increase the likelihood of steel cracking during the welding process. Carbon steel with higher carbon quantities will require slower cooling rates. We utilize factors such as the ambient temperature and thickness of the steel to determine the ideal cooling rate for a particular weld.

The higher the cooling rate, the smaller the size of the grain and the quality increases the hardness of the steel. When the cooling rate is rapid, it increases the strength of the steel but reduces toughness and flexibility, leading to cracks. In industrial steel production and welding, cooling rates higher than 50 dg/s are rare because conditions are less controlled, and there are too many variables.
